Updated Skincare Routine Spring 2012: Face

Good morning from Singapore! I touched down yesterday at 630am after an 11-hour flight from Frankfurt and I was seriously jellified from jet lag yesterday. While it is always a fierce battle to stay awake during the day, I always love the super early mornings although I cannot sleep in the wee hours so I went for a jog and watched the sun rise over the Little Red Dot – light purple, streaky orange, pale blue skies dotted with white fluffy clouds. It was sweltering even at 6am but what else can you expect from a hot and steamy tropical island. eh?

So it does seem a little weird to be blogging about my spring time skincare routine in Japan but I thought it could be interesting for my fellow sensitive skin sisters to have a look at what’s working for me right now.

Just a bit of background for those who don’t know my skin type: I have oily combination skin that is prone to dehydration and acne, plus I tend to get rashes if I use heavily fragranced and/or complex formulas, so I keep it really simple these days.

In the morning, I wash my face with CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser. I may alternate this with the Hada Labo es Foaming Facial Wash and the only reason I do so is that I may take a shower in the morning and the Hada Labo one sits in the shower room and the CeraVe one is next to the bathroom sink. I like both equally and they clean well without stripping my skin.

Next, I dot my T-zone with my ever-reliable Clinique Anti-Blemish Clearing Moisturizer with salicylic acid to prevent my pores from clogging. Then, I follow up with a coin-sized blob of Physiogel Cream all over my face and neck, after which, I would put on whatever sunscreen I may be using at the moment. I’m almost done with the Hada Labo UV Cream (this has been sadly discontinued) and will switch to a lighter one as soon as the weather gets warmer.

In the evening, I remove my makeup with Mutenka Cow Brand Cleansing Oil. I stopped using eye makeup remover for now because this cleansing oil does a pretty good job of taking off all my eye makeup (and my mascara of the moment is Deja Vu’s Fiberwig Mascara which is easy to remove).

And then I use CeraVe or Hada Labo to wash my face with my Clarisonic. Now, if I had a particularly sweaty day or wore my makeup for more than 12 hours, I would use Clarins’ Gentle Foaming Cleanser as it has a slight stripping effect which is something I actually like when my skin feels all clogged up.

Then, like in the morning, I follow up with the Clinique moisturizer on my T-zone, and then I spread three drops of Jason’s Natural Vitamin E Oil all over my face and neck.

If I have a pimple, I would spot treat it with Clean & Clear’s Persa-Gel 10 which heals zits like a charm and I’ve been using this for the past couple of years.

So that’s it – really spare and simple and this has helped my sensitive skin immensely. I’m on the hunt for an eye cream because I began to notice visible fine lines around my eye area and I’m tempted start experimenting with serums again since my skin has stabilized.

Do you have any serums you can recommend for sensitive skin? What’s your tried-and-tested skincare routine? I love reading about other people’s skincare routines because you never know what might work for someone else, could also work for you.

Updated Skincare Routine

Hi my dearies, I know I’ve been missing from Youtube for a long time but I think this video kind of explains it. I didn’t have the heart to film because I had skin problems but I think I found my groove for now. I think my skin couldn’t handle all the strong products I layered on my skin before, especially sheet masks (I know, *sad trombone*) so I’ve switched to a very pared down routine now.

Morning routine:
Hada Labo es Foaming Facial Wash
Hada Labo es Lotion
Clinique Anti-Blemish Clearing Moisturizer
Physiogel Cream
Hada Labo es Milk (as eye cream)

Night routine:
Hada Labo es Cleansing Liquid
Mandom Beauty Cleansing Express Eyemakeup Remover
Hada Labo es Foaming Facial Wash or Mutenka Cow Brand Facial Wash (Normal/Oily Skin)
Hada Labo es Lotion
Clinique Anti-Blemish Clearing Moisturizer
Jason Vitamin E Oil

Spot treatment:
Naruko Naouli & Tea Tree Oil Serum
Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10

Foundation Reviews: BB Creams & Liquid Foundation

Between the time I filmed this video and uploaded it, I actually got more BB creams and liquid foundations :O So these videos do not reflect my entire collection but I think it would’ve been pointless to include the new ones because I haven’t test drove them long enough.

It dawned on me why some beauty fanatics are especially crazy about base makeup — it’s the never-ending quest to achieve flawless skin and coupled with the fact that no product would EVER be an exact match for your skin tone makes the chase even more fervent, plus your own skin changes with time (and even more so if you live in a place with changing seasons), so what suited you 12 months ago may not be the right one for you now.

Put your hand up if you are nuts about base makeup!

PS: Just TEN days more till my 3rd Anniversary/Birthday giveaway ends (lots of my ultimate fave Japanese beauty products to be won and THREE winners will be picked; go get your tush over there)!

Singapore Haul & Reviews

Hello my lovelies, a week has gone by since I returned from Singapore and it’s has zipped by so quickly I don’t know what hit me. I went to Singapore to settle some wedding stuff but I managed to find time to shop. Duty-free and a cheaper currency are all there is to tempt me. I ♥ shopping when I go back to Singapore!

Before I get into my post proper, just a reminder that my giveaway ends in 24 hours! So go on over and put your name down….

I don’t usually buy so much at once and the bulk of my beauty shopping is really my Naruko products which I have been lemming since forever. For those who don’t know, Naruko is a natural paraben-free skincare and cosmetics brand from Taiwan that is formuated by celebrity skincare and makeup guru Niu Er. I’ve heard so much about how great Naruko is on Youtube that I had to get some. Though it is not available in Japan, there is a Singapore website so I just ordered a bunch of products and got them sent to my parents’ residence. I’m also flying to Taiwan in July so I might pick some up there but I’m not sure if Naruko is an internet-only shop which is the case in Singapore (click here) — it was only sold online and none of the stores carried the brand.

I know I said in my early summer skincare routine video that I was avoiding herb ingredients but some Youtubers with sensitive skin tried Naruko and they didn’t have flare-ups….and my skin is improving so hopefully it’s not as sensitive as it was before. What can I say, I’m really an incurable beauty junkie!

Anyway, hope you enjoy this video and till the next episode!

Acne Product Review: Neutrogena & Clinique

Thank you for all your positive feedback on my 7-Day Salad Handbook (have you had a salad today?) and don’t forget to take part in the Mandom Barrier Repair giveaway (it ends on June 30) — lotsa goodies to be won!

Now before I dive into my review of the acne products from Neutrogena and Clinique, can I just say that my bathroom has never looked so dull? Why do manufacturers have to come up with such plain, clinical designs for acne/sensitive skincare products? I would feel better just for a teensy bit if I had something cute and pretty to look at on top of acne problems….Okay, rant over…

I’ve used most of these products for two months now so I think I have come to some fair conclusions.

Photobucket

I wouldn’t say this transformed my skin but I think it helped to keep clogged pores at bay — it’s not a miracle god-send type of product but it’s a light oil-free moisturizer with salicylic acid that reduces the occurrence of getting clogged pores. It doesn’t feel effective during intense breakouts, but then during such times, nothing feels like it’s working either…

I think this is still a good option because it doesn’t make my skin feel oily though it is a little too light so I need to put on a serum to counteract that slightly tight feeling I get after putting it on. Despite my seemingly lukewarm feelings towards this product, I have re-purchased this four times already (it’s a small tube and I use this twice a day) so I’ve been using this for about four months. I have repurchased this because I cannot find a better substitute to be honest.

Photobucket

Let me come straight off the bat and say, this spot treatment actually made my skin worse. I find that if I put it on a spot, especially a cystic one, I actually get a cluster of acne around the original one. Gross but true…It happened so many times that I have half a mind to toss this one into the bin after this review!

Photobucket

This Clean & Clear Persa Gel-10 on the other hand reduces and dries acne quickly. I can see a big difference overnight so I’m forever using this. Forever and ever. Even if it means buying it online on Drugstore.com and shipping is ludicrous.

Photobucket

For the Neutrogena Acne Stress Control product, I really wanted to like this because I read so many good reviews on Makeup Alley and Paul Begoun’s Beautypedia ranked this as an exceptional acne product but it made me break out in a red rash on my face in less than a week (applied twice a day). I refused to believe this wasn’t working for me so I cut back to once a day but my skin was really in a mess so I stopped using it shortly after.

I tried using it on my chest and back but again I broke out in a rash. So now I use it once or twice a week and I have no rashes. I’m actually doing a combination of things to improve my body acne (I will elaborate this in another post) so I’m not sure if this product actually works in aiding that, so this will probably not be a repurchase for me.

Photobucket

I got the Neutrogena Rapid Clear product because it also had outstanding reviews but thankfully I only tried it on my body because I had more acne (not sure if this was due to the product or my errant hormones) and rashes in just two days. I would have died if my face suffered in the same way — I wouldn’t have been able to leave the house.

Anyway, I tried to cut back on using it from twice a day to once a day to every other day but it just got worse so I’m junking this. But having said that, I have trouble throwing away almost full tubes/bottles of products that don’t work for me. I hope that with enough time, I would just toss them out!

I have read that people with sensitive acne-prone skin have allergic reactions to common acne treatments like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide — the horror! I don’t think I’m allergic to salicylic acid per se — maybe the amount and frequency matter?

As a final note on coming off the pill (read about my story stopping the pill here), I have despaired over this many times but I think time does heal. I feel that this past month has been an improvement over the past several months. I expected to break out like crazy because I always do in two-week cycles but so far everything is under control. Do not give up!!!

Do you have any acne treatments you love? Please share if you do!

Updated Skincare Routine: Early Summer

I’m on a roll with the videos lately — I figured I’ll milk the creative streak I’m having and see where it takes me. And…THANK YOU so much for your lovely comments on my second e-book, 7-Day Salad Handbook – go grab a copy if you haven’t already (it’s free)! Quite a few of my readers said that the warm weather is perfect for salads and very rightly so…

Today’s video showcases my skincare routine this early summer. The weather is getting warmer but the temperatures do dip below 20 degrees C and it’s not that humid yet. The air gets horribly muggy in July and August which I’m sure would change the products I use yet again. My skincare routine is always a work in progress…

But right now, this line-up works for me. I find that I still need to moisturize with at least two or more hydrating products because the air does get drier in the night.

Products used in this video:

Night Routine:
Mandom Barrier Repair Facial Foam + Clarisonic
Mandom Barrier Repair Baby Moist Lotion Super Moist
Mandom Barrier Repair Facial Mask HA Super Moist
Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Clearing Moisturizer
Mandom Barrier Repair Concentrate Serum
Clean & Clear Persa Gel-10
Good Skin Labs Serum-365

Morning Routine:
The same, except I replace the Mandom Barrier Repair Concentrate Serum with Clinique’s Super City Block Ultra Protection SPF 40 and I pat the Mandom Barrier Repair Baby Moist Super Moist Lotion into my skin, instead of using a cotton pad.

You can buy Mandom Barrier Repair products from my store right over here.

Thanks for watching and have a great weekend!

I’m going to the beach tomorrow — what are you doing?

Cream eye shadows for extra shimmer

I can’t live without cream eye shadow. Perhaps it’s because I have very solid powder type eye shadows so they tend to look a bit rough, much like using a crayon on your eyelids.

Photobucket

I started using Paul & Joe Eye Gloss in yellow-gold and silver when I worked at a women’s magazine in Singapore four years ago. I sat next to the beauty writer and she always passed me stuff she didn’t want when she cleaned out her drawers.

Silly me used it on its own and found it too light, so I rubbed it over my eye shadow and I’ve been lovin’ that sheer shimmer effect ever since. Unfortunately, my Paul & Joe eye gloss is on its last legs and I think it’s prudent to get rid of such old makeup.

Before my flight from Singapore to Tokyo, I got this lil’ baby:

Photobucket

Clinique Quick Eyes Cream Shadow in 11 Glimmering Gold. Apparently, it’s great for those who wear contacts as it is not gloopy or contains dusty sparkles that irritate eyes.

Photobucket

When I tested it, it felt so powdery smooth even though it’s liquid. It’s sheer enough to use over other eye colours, but I think you could have a dramatic gold look if you apply more layers — brownie point for flexibility. My Paul & Joe one is really much more liquid and it is after all an eye gloss.

Since we’re talking about eye makeup, here’s a small plug on something on sale at Beauty Box — a limited edition Shu Uemura Eye Shadow in a pretty lilac shade with a gorgeous flower design on the powder palette itself.
