Collagen in Japanese everyday life

Those of you who watched Oprah’s Japanese Beauty Secrets clip would’ve marveled at how readily available collagen is in Japan. You can watch it here if you haven’t.

In the clip, Japanese beauty expert Miki Okae says she eats collagen-rich beef tendons, and then there were small mentions of collagen drinks available in convenience stores and collagen-infused chicken and vegetable hot pot.

[As an aside, I’ll like to clarify that the, ah, nightingale poop is not common at all. In fact I think it would make your average Japanese girl squeal in disgust like the rest of us.]

Today, I’m going to show you Youtube videos (very short ones, I promise!) on collagen in Japanese life.

Video #1: Pork-based collagen broth with pork slices and cabbage. You can see it looks like a regular Asian dish.

Video #2: Collagen ramen. Yup, believe it when I say it, tonkatsu (pork-based) ramen has a creamy broth chock full of collagen. Some are richer than others and there are ramen shops that advertise their ramen specifically as collagen ramen to attract the ladies.

Video #3: This one features a jelly-like ball of collagen with edible gold flakes to be slipped into a hot pot. Totally amazing! This one has to be my favorite among all the videos.

Video #4: My eyes absolutely widened when I saw this one — marine collagen infused bilberry wine. There is also yuzu (Japanese mandarin) flavored collagen wine, and they have another one called “seaqweser”, which I have no clue what it is — Google couldn’t help either.

Anyway, the lady in the video says the taste is slightly sweeter than red wine and alcohol content is 7 per cent per bottle. But I wonder if there are any merits in drinking collagen and alcohol because it actually destroys collagen.

Which is your favorite video?

i like video#2, cos it looks yummy and i wanna eat it… :P

I love the pork cartilage ramen I had in Osaka. I have not been able to find anything remotely close to that outside of Japan!!!

I must admit, I follow some good old Chinese habits my parents passed on to me. I eat lots of fish maw, beef tendon, chicken feet, etc. for the collagen. I wish they were low fat though! :-P

Your videos made me very hungry!!

I know what you mean, any food that is rich in collagen tends to be high in fat, too.
