Do You Like Nail Stickers?
Happy Chinese New Year to all my readers who celebrate this festive holiday! I’m glad that I can be in Singapore to catch the tail end of the celebrations with my family. How do you celebrate Chinese New Year if you live away from home?
Today’s Beauty Debate is quite a specific topic on nail stickers — yay or nay?
I love the way they look, and I’m not very artistic either so painting my own designs is so hard with clumsy fingers, plus I’m I’m deathly afraid of gel nail polish, so stickers are really the way to go without spoiling nail health.
However, nail stickers can sport a range of quality. Recently, I discovered an old packet of nail stickers that have been languishing in my drawer for almost a year now so I took them out to play.
The effect was gorgeous and I was very happy with it. Application was a little challenging but I quickly got the hang of using tweezers to unstick them from the palette and then transfer them onto my nails.
Unfortunately, overnight these stickers attracted the lint from my bed covers and got stuck all over my nails. Pulling out the lint damaged the delicate stickers so my “clever” manicure only lasted barely a day. Lesson learned: don’t get nail stickers that “pop up” and go for designs that stick absolutely flat and seamless on the nail.
How do you like your nail deco done? Do you always go to the salon? Use fake nails with ready designs? Or a nail sticker fiend like me?

I like nail stickers since I do my own manicure in Japan. It lets me get creative and it’s fun! Not so fun when it’s time to remove them though^^
I didn’t go back to SIN this year so just had reunion dinner with my husband at home with home cooking. I miss CNY goodies…
If I do my nails, I tend to paint on details instead of using stickers, or I just do sponge art, but I discovered turtle nail stickers in Tokyo (at Picaso, I think) and since turtles are my favourite animals, but I can’t paint that well, I bought several packs. xD
They stick on the nails quite well with a top coat, but of course they’re really small and slim, I guess bigger, thicker stickers might be more of a problem.
(I actually have pictures on my blog somewhere, don’t know if posting a link is considered spam?)
@Agnes: I know – nail stickers are so fun but a real bitch to remove cleanly – haha… Happy CNY! It’s my first time in Singapore during this festive season in 7 years…so I know how you feel in Tokyo during this time. Chin up! Maybe visit SG next year?
@Julia: Turtles sound cute and you stocked up quite a bit to take them back with you to Germany eh?
nail stickers…i like collecting them;in a sense. i tell myself to use them but afterwards i regret it when i see the outcome because im terrible at applying them and many are wasted when they stick together. But they are very pretty none the less.
-it wasn’t a nail sticker but i remember when i was younger i had nail tattoos. similar to the temporary skin tattoos that apply with water except much smaller in size.
-when you remove the nail sticker is it difficult to remove because of the adhesive? i think you can try using rubbing alcohol to make it easier.
@kimby: Okay I’ll give rubbing alcohol a go. The nail polish remover I used didn’t seem to dissolve the gummy stuff on the stickers so it was annoying. Nail tattoos! I don’t believe I ever heard of them though I have heard of skin ones.
Belated happy new year to you, Yu Ming! I had a good lunch with the Belgian family I used to live with to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It was good!
I’ve really only tried nail stickers once so far, and they’re from ncLA. I really do like them, especially when I can find a design that I like! I am useless at nail art, so if I want fancy nails sticker is the only way to go
@Sunny: Hello!! Sounds like you had a lovely Chinese New Year. Know that it can be challenging in a country which doesn’t celebrate this festive holiday. I tend to throw a party with my friends and cook up a storm.
Will look out for that brand ncLA because I love fancy nail stickers too.
Usually nail stickers are great! It all depends on the style and quality.
Did you use a top coat? I hate having to layer base, polish, and top coat since it takes for every but maybe it’s necessary in the case of nail stickers.
If I had money I’d simply go to the salon, haha. I like gel nails a lot but they are a bit difficult to master on your own.
@mishi: yup I used a top coat, plus base coat etc. It is time consuming but I like watching TV while doing my nails so I don’t mind waiting for each layer to dry.
The funny thing is, I can actually draw or paint decently. But I’m too lazy to do so and that’s why I like nail stickers. I’ve tried 2 types: the real “sticker” and the stick-it “nail polish” like the one from Sally Hansen. I like the quality of the latter more because it really lasts and it’s so thin you can’t feel it. But it’s more expensive at $18 for one set
The cheaper one ($4) peels off easily and pops up, as how you described it.
@Vivi: I tried nail strips and didn’t like them but I only gave the Sephora brand a go – they didn’t stick well at all. I heard good things about Sally Hansen nail strips. They can be expensive though the trade-off is in their longevity apparently.
