I was intrigued by bloggers murmuring about Steam Cream being the bomb, e.g. Lisa Eldridge loves it and blogged about it here, so I had to check it out.
I won’t go into detail about the special steaming process they use to make this cream which makes its gorgeous creamy whipped texture (you can read about it here instead).
What really attracted me to this cream is that it is said to sink into your skin deeply and moisturizes without being greasy. And it also claims it is suitable for sensitive skin and as a facial moisturizer. For the list of ingredients, you can read it here. The bulk of the cream is made of almond oil, cocoa butter, and a slew of essential oils, and do note it has some parabens right at the end.
Now I have tried this cream all over my body and face and my conclusion isn’t very different from other bloggers’: it smells wonderful (if you love lavender); it is very moisturizing but not suitable for oily skin types if used on the face; it makes a lovely gift because of the packaging; best as a hand cream — you could use it on your body but I think with such a small tub at the price tag of 1,500JPY (USD19), I’m hesitant to squander it all on my limbs (I need quite a lot of body lotion).
Some folks might find it unhygenic to dip their fingers into the tub and I do see that as a downside as well but I always make sure I wash my hands before I do that.
The small size is great for travelling and that’s also when you need the grunt of a good moisturizer. Or I can envision this as a multitasking option if you are on the plane and need to moisturize your face and hands quickly. The lavender scent could be quite relaxing and soothing as you nap on the plane, too.
I have tried this as a facial moisturizer for a few days and it’s too rich as a day moisturizer for oily/combination skin types, but I could use this as a night moisturizer in winter. If you have dry skin, I think it could work for you. I also have sensitive skin but I didn’t break out from this at all, despite its richness.
Why did I buy this? Well, I was experimenting with different products for sensitive skin and steam cream seemed like a viable option at the time. By the way, I’ve got a huge post on sensitive skincare products coming up soon!
I’m not sure if I would re-purchase this but I would definitely buy it for others as it’s such a cute affordable present that would make any girly girl happy. I mean, who doesn’t need some hand cream once in a while?
Have you tried Steam Cream? Do you like it?

agreed, i used 2 tins before but mainly for the drier weather in japan when I visit and love that I could use it on my face and body…and I even dab a little on my frizzy hair (so imagine a all rounder in this little tin)

So cute! But too expensive for daily use… I also need a lot these days. Could you recommend a good body cream that can be found in Japan?

i have never used steamcream before but i am just dying to try it since i have heard many great reviews on it. for $19 its quite the price for me especially if im going to have to pay for the shipping too but im desperate to try it at least once hopefully :]

@Xuan: I never thought of using it on the ends of my hair – great tip! Will keep that in mind when I tote this baby along when I travel.
@Jessica: I tend to steer clear of drugstore body creams in Japan and prefer The Body Shop and Korres (found in Bals) and Burt’s Bees (Loft). I swatched Cath Kidson’s body cream and hand cream at Loft and thought they were very moisturizing and have been lemming for their honeysuckle LE range. They have Rose and Bluebell, plus their creams are paraben and sulphate free.
@kimby: yes it is quite pricey but I’m learning that it is actually worth spending more on a good body/hand moisturizer. If you are just going to use this cream for your hands and face, then it is worth getting as it would last longer. For me, I think this tin would only last a week if I used it all over my body, if that is any indication how small it is.

I love Steam Cream! I have to admit at least half of the appeal is in the tin designs for me but I wash my hands so often at work they crack, so to find a light cream that absorbs is worth the investment for me. I use the tins for jewelry after

I totally agree with you that Steam Cream is fast absorbing and the scent also doesn’t linger for long which makes this such a great workhorse of a handcream. My hands get dry in this wintry air and I pack boxes often so my hands get battered and even peel.

I was just thinking lately how come you didn’t do a review on Steam cream…and voila!^^ I use it for inflight, for hands, arms and legs but not the face. I guess I wasn’t confident about using this relatively new product on the face but since you’ve tried I might too…thanks!

I checked the Japanese site and the British site and there was a huge difference, the tins sold for the Japanese market are so much cuter!
I find Steam Cream too moisturizing for my face as well, but my elbows and knees love it to death.

Heard nothing but great things abt SteamCream for the body! And the pkg is always cute! Thanks for the review!

Aww cute design! I have a tin myself! I think what I liked most about it is the cute design and reusable tin. =) I also found it was too rich for my face even though I have dry skin. I think if it was cheaper I would buy more just for the tins, lol.

@Blair: Yeah that’s right. The Japanese have taken it to a whole new level of limited edition designs which make people go crazy for them.
@Wuzzyangel: I actually brought this along for a one-day tennis/onsen trip and it was seriously great as a multitasking lotion. And compact too!
@Diana: Good to have an angle from someone who has dry skin. Perhaps the amount of oils in the product just makes this too rich for most people. I also agree that if it were cheaper, I would use it and buy it more often. Right now I’m just saving it for travel or when my hands are peeling from the dry air.

high-five girl! Couldn’t agree more, best fitted as a hand cream, next body! Haven’t tried it on the face.. scared it’d be too thick and it’s also quite heavily fragrance even though it is lavender scented!
By Nic nic on 02.29.12 11:24 am | Permalink
Hi nic, high-five back! I had the same misgivings for my face but it turned out quite okay as a night moisturizer. The scent does seem quite strong but it fades away pretty quickly.

i have used steamcream before, i don’t think i will repurchase unless it’s for gift. i get bored if i am using the same product for too long.
By xin on 02.29.12 2:50 pm | Permalink
Hi xin, that’s true for me too…I can’t use the same body lotion/butter twice in a row…I need to change it up but I do go back to the ones I like, but I would never stick with just one scent.
