Tag: Get To Know Me Thru’ A Random Q&A

Hi friends, apologies for not posting all week. I’ve been incredibly jet lagged in NYC and bogged down by work and real life. I don’t deal well with jet lag but I know it will fade eventually. The husband takes two days to adjust his body clock but I take more than a week. I also try not to think what will happen when I return to Asia – more jet lag, groan…Sorry for the whinging but sometimes it’s not all peaches and roses here at Beauty Box HQ.

So I decided to do something fun and easy…a tag post inspired by Bronzer Bunny (her tag post is here), whom I have recently grown to like and find her to be highly entertaining.

What is your dream job?
Hmm, this is a tough one. My dream job would involve helping people feel good about themselves and it would let me work from home, so I can take care of my family (that has always figured in my future plans especially after I got married) but still earn a decent income. It would also challenge me intellectually and allow me to interact with other people. I know this sounds vague but I’m working on making my dream job come true. :)

Are you a baker or a cook?
I’m definitely more of a cook as I don’t really have a sweet tooth. I love making spicy Asian food, and turn to grilling and oven-baking meat because I like it crispy. I’d only started baking when I moved into my house a year ago because the kitchen as an old-fashioned gas-powered oven. If I do bake, I make very simple cupcakes or pound cakes. I’ve only ever attempted an Oreo cheesecake once for the husband who is a cheesecake fiend.

On your beauty journey, have you noticed any changes in your preferences in any way?
I used to dislike brown eyeshadows when I started wearing makeup but now I am a self-declared neutrals freak. I also went after trendy scents when I was much younger but now I lean towards simpler floral scents like rose and jasmine, which sounds a little old lady but I truly love these notes.

In your refrigerator, what is always in there?
What a truly random question! Miso paste, eggs, shoyu, vitamins, apple cider vinegar, mirin (sweet rice wine), and olives.

You crave for sweets or savory and what was your last intense craving?
Savory! I think it was because I grew up on instant noodles/ramen and salty junk food — though I was told by my mum that my granny used to feed me shoyu-laced rice porridge as a wee toddler. Which brings me to the next part of the question: I craved congee with spring onion, shoyu, and minced pork. If only I were near Congee Village in Chinatown, I would so appreciate a steaming hot bowl right now.

Last gift you gave?
A book to my husband for Valentine’s Day. Another nugget of information: for the first time in our relationship history, he did not get me a present or flowers and it was quite confusing because it was the first time we were together on this day for many years. I was perturbed but realized it is time to forget this highly commercialized day because he is really sweet to me anyway on a daily basis and further more he said, “It’s hard to get you flowers when we are getting on a plane tomorrow.” I suppose, if anything, I was mourning the end of an era but that sounds way too dramatic. I teased him a little about it but I don’t have any hard feelings. I would rather splurge on a huge present for him on his birthday.

Last gift received?
Gosh this was hard. I think it was X’mas which I received several presents at once – a pedicure, a facial, a bag organizer, and a scarf.

What is your current beauty item that is welling up into an uncontrollable urge?
Cream shadows. I just got two Maybelline Color Tattoos – Inked In Pink and Barely Branded – which I love to death right now. I feel like getting more, but seriously, cream shadows are near impossible to hit pan because you only need a smidgen at a time. I love collecting them nonetheless…

At what age have you gotten your first white hair?
I was 33, which was about a year and a half ago. My MIL actually spotted it and picked it out for me to see. I was shocked but I suppose it was easy to spot because I have dark hair. I wasn’t pleased but neither was I “woe is me I’m old”.

What is the last horror movie you’ve watched?
I am scared of horror movies so the last full one I watched was Carrie. Yeah, it was that long ago.

What is a holy grail beauty product that you’ve discovered?
Can I name two? Astalift Jelly Aquarysta and Essence Destiny (but could be known as Firming Serum in English; though this is just a speculation because the Japanese moniker wouldn’t go down well in the UK, I would think). They just leave my skin plump and clear. It has to be all that lycopene in them. o.o

Now it’s your turn to be tagged!

  1. Just commenting…I think that Valentine’s Day is so awfully commercialized. I have been with my husband for more than 10 years, and we have never celebrated Valentine’s Day. It is our mutual agreement not to celebrate such commercialized days, and we ignore it successfully. I was always like that, and when I met my future husband I was very, very happy that there are people who are like me. So, do not worry about that, and actually I am glad your husband do not care much about that day if you know what I mean. :) Besides, you got so much better present, and that is traveling (okay, minus jet lag :) )). I hope you enjoy your time on this side of the Pacific. :D

  2. @Sandra: Many years ago, the husband said he would rather be safe and send me flowers just in case I was secretly into V-day because he said some women declare it a stupid occasion but end up expecting a gesture anyway haha! And I think it was just to take away the sting of being away so much in general but I would feel obligated to get him something back although deep down V-day didn’t matter to me. It did when I was in my early 20s but after being in a long term committed r/s, these things really don’t matter so much. Anyway, I think it’s good that we have ended this cycle of obligation haha. Though I would never say no to flowers, whatever the reason, on principle. ;)

  3. OMG me too! I hated brown shadows and found them to be a weird colour but now, my vocabulary is limited to neutrals LOL

Lucky lucky you, 33?! Mine first appeared when I was 15 *sobs*

  4. Oh, yes, I totally agree with you, and totally understand you! Flowers are always beautiful. I adore flowers. Sometimes I just purchase flowers to elevate my mood, and make my desk and room looking beautiful. <3

P.S. I love brown eye shadows! The color suits my blue eyes, and make my eyes looking good haha. :) )

  5. @Blair: Yeah I thought brown was for boring people and a muddy colour. Glad to know another neutrals fiend!

  6. nice tag! I think I would get myself tagged on this post after I settle down with my “own” fridge in 2 weeks…hehehe…

ohhhh, jet lag…hated it…and I think it is worse for me when I travel from the west back to the east.

V day….hmmmmm……I was really perplexed when I did not even get a “happy valentines day” message when we we started dating….then I realise…oh, 2/14 is for the girls to do something for the boys and the boys will return the favor on 3/14. Till date, I still tease him on this that he forgot that I am not Japanese..I still want something nice on 2/14.

I absolutely agree on the Astalift jelly….I gave my mum some but I sneaked some for my own use. I love the fact when I open the jar the next day that the jelly would settle back to look new again even when I had dug into yesterday. :)

  7. @Xuan: I found a fellow Astalift fan! My Japanese friends don’t like the brand because it used to make film. I’m sure Vda ¥y is a strange experience with a Japanese guy. I think Xmas is seen as a romantic day and not Vday or White Day. Things just move along as usual and only teenagers really love these two days and take them seriously. It was so weird for me as well.

  8. I was skeptical initially too but thinking from a engineering perspective, it is really amazing they used their nano technology to a beauty product and revive their company when film is just dying off. Plus, when I see the jelly settled like new the next day when I open the jar, I say “hey, my skin can become like that too!” LOL, totally weird I know :P

Yeah, but I don’t harp on it since he is so nice on other days…I guess maturity comes with age? :P
