There’s beauty and balance in consistency

A big thank you to all of you who took part in my first blog giveaway (a chance to win a free bottle of Mandom Cleansing Express Agecare Q10) and there’re still three days more to the deadline on Monday.

It’s the end of the week and I’m a little contemplative and would like to share some of my thoughts — it’s something that has been on my mind quite a bit and it’s about being consistent.

Keeping good habits sounds like a boring old tune, but recently, I’ve found a lot of heart and soul in consistency.

What does it have to do with health and beauty? Well, a lot. I think a lot of people look for instant solutions to reverse problems that are probably caused by the opposite — bad habits.

Personally, I try to do the following daily to keep myself in balance:

+ Get enough sleep
+ Eat a good portion of greens, veggies, and fruit
+ Drink a lot of water
+ Try not to snack before bed
+ Try not to consume packaged, processed food
+ Use gentle products on my skin
+ Cleanse, tone, and moisturize
+ Work out regularly
+ Have some me-time to keep stress at bay
+ Be grateful to feel happy

Now, I don’t always achieve these things everyday and I’ve also been guilty of over-doing some “good” habits like exercise. In the past, I’ve over-exercised to lose weight and I ended up with very sore muscles and enjoyed my workouts less and less. If I skipped a planned workout, I’ll have an epic session the next day to make up for the guilt but exercise became something painful and torturous.

When it came to my attention that the problem lay elsewhere, I stopped working out so much and focused more on my nutrition, which was really the culprit for putting on weight.

I think women tend to have an all-or-nothing attitude to doing certain things but it doesn’t have to be that way. I think doing a bit of what’s good as often as you can makes a big difference — slowly.

Another example close to home are my fading sand fly bites. Last Christmas, I got ravaged by sand flies on the beach in Sri Lanka and came away with huge angry red welts. For those who are familiar with sand fly bites, they are not like regular bug bites that go away very quickly. I despaired over the scars and applied aloe vera and Vitamin E oil on the affected areas and drank copious amounts of juice with coriander/cilantro (apparently, it draws out toxins from the body).

But for the first three months, I didn’t see any improvement to my dismay. I actually felt self-conscious and refrained from going to onsens (Japanese hot springs) with my friends. But you know, it’s been six months and the scars are almost all are gone except for an especially huge one just below my left butt cheek that looks very light now. I was glad I kept up my regime and didn’t give up.

And being consistent is valuable to almost everything I can think of — chronic health issues, skin conditions, finding your passion, achieving your dreams, improving relationships, looking for fulfillment and much more.

Basically it’s keeping at it as much as you can, and when it becomes ingrained, you just fly with it.

I’m not “flying” yet, but I’m sure I’ll get there eventually.
